Garlic - My Favorite Healing Herb

By Lee Dobbins Garlic is a wonderful healing herb and, unlike many of the other herbs, it tastes great and can be incorporated into a variety of meals. Garlic has been used for over 5000 years as a healing herb and has strong antibacterial, and antiviral properties. But its health benefits extend well beyond its infection fighting properties. It is also reputed to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure as well as help protect against heart disease and stroke. And the benefits of garlic don't stop there. A recent study has shown that taking a garlic supplement once a day can reduce the risk of getting a cold by 50% and help you gain a speedy recovery if you do happen to catch one. In fact, I tried this out recently when I felt a sore throat coming on I toasted a piece of bread and added some raw crushed garlic to it. It was a bit pungent but I woke up the next day good as new! Aside from colds, garlic has historically been used as a remedy for infections, athletes foot, worms, respiratory ailments, some cancers of the stomach, colic, ear aches, bladder problems and high blood pressure. Garlic is jut plain good for you too! it is loaded with vitamins and minerals including Vitamin A, B and C, selenium, potassium, calcium, zinc and magnesium. But in order to reap the benefits, you must prepare it in a certain way. Researcher say it is the allicin that is released when garlic is crushed. If you are trying to serve yourself a garlic herbal remedy by adding garlic to your foods then make sure you crush it a bit ahead of time and don't add until the final 5 minutes of cooking. This will give the allicin enough time to develop and will insure you don't cook all the garlic health out of it. Cooked garlic will not have as much benefit as raw and whole garlic cloves have little benefit at all. Another way to incorporate garlic into your meals without cooking is to make a garlic bread where you crush the gloves into a paste and toast bread - butter the toasted bread and spread the garlic on it - Yum! Spring Into God's Love

By Paul Griffitts Spring is springing here in the Pacific Northwest the plants and trees are blooming. We are fast approaching the Christian celebration of Easter Sunday and if my Catholic is correct we should be in Lent right now. Lent is a Catholic season of soul-searching and repentance. Lent is a time for reflection and taking a good look at what our lives are all about. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Catholic imitates Jesus withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. This would account for the gesture of, Giving up something for Lent. I was Catholic when I was growing up in New York City, back then giving up something for Lent which started forty days before Easter Sunday, kicked off by Ash Wednesday, (which is a whole other story in itself) I tried my hardest to give up something I really liked, something like RC Cola. It never worked and mainly because I didn't understand why I was giving something up. Today I understand it and in some twisted way the symbolic gesture of giving up something we like between the days of the passion and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ seems like a good idea since our Heavenly Father gave up His only begotten Son for our sins the least we can do is take a break from Starbucks Lattes or something like that. Well, I don't think I will return to my Catholic roots anytime soon but I may add a little reflection to this season by reaching out to someone in need with the Gospel. We have a duty to our Lord that since we have been given this wonderful eternal life we share that love with others. The most remarkable aspect of Lent is that it actually commemorates the time Jesus was in the wilderness. It was that time that the temptations occurred and Jesus withstood the confrontation of the Devil. You and I will never be tempted by the Devil; we will however be tempted by Satan as was Eve in the Garden but never directly by the Devil as Jesus was. What a tremendous example to us, how much did He love the Father and would always do His will. So as the foliage returns to the Pacific Northwest and your hometown, as spring begins, we have the awesome privilege to know God and His Son Jesus Christ and His matchless Word. 5 Relationship Killers and How to Avoid Them

By Margaret Paul, Ph.D. As a relationship counselor, I am constantly being asked why so many relationships fail. In the 37 years that I have worked with couples, I have discovered five major relationship killers: CONTROLLING BEHAVIOR Most people enter a relationship with a deep fear of rejection, and this fear motivates various forms of controlling behavior. Controlling behavior falls into two major categories overt control and covert control. Overt control includes many forms of attack, such as blaming anger, rage, violence, judgment, criticism and ridicule. Covert control includes compliance, enabling, withdrawal, defending, explaining, lying and denying. Often a person at the other end of attack will respond with some form of covert control in an attempt to have control over not being attacked. Controlling behavior always results in resentment and emotional distance, bringing about the very rejection that it is meant to avoid. RESISTANCE Many people enter a relationship with a deep fear of being engulfed and controlled of losing themselves. The moment they experience their partner wanting control over them, they respond with resistance withdrawal, unconsciousness, numbness, forgetfulness, and procrastination. When one partner is controlling and the other is resistant which is really an attempt to have control over not being controlled - the relationship becomes immobilized. Partners in this relationship system feel frustrated, stagnant, and resentful. NEEDINESS Many people enter a relationship believing that it is their partners job to fill their emptiness, take away their aloneness, and make them feel good about themselves. When people have not learned how to take responsibility for their own feelings and needs, and to define their own self-worth, they may pull on their partner and others to fill them with the love they need. SUBSTANCE AND PROCESS ADDICTIONS Most people who feel empty inside turn to substance and process addictions in an attempt to fill their emptiness and take away the pain of their aloneness and loneliness. Alcohol and drug abuse, food, spending, gambling, busyness, Internet sex and pornography, affairs, work, TV, accumulating things, beautifying, and so on, can all be used as ways to fill emptiness and avoid fears of failure, inadequacy, rejection and engulfment. And they are all ways of shutting out your partner. EYES ON PARTNERS PLATE Many people are acutely aware of what their partner is doing that is causing relationship problems, but completely unaware of what they are doing. For example, you might be very aware of your partners resistance or withdrawal, but totally unaware of your own judgmental behavior. You might be very aware of your partners anger, but completely unaware of your own compliance. You might be very aware of your partners addictive behavior, but very unaware of your own enabling. As long as your eyes are on your partner instead of on yourself, you will continue to believe that if only your partner changed, everything would be okay. RESOLVING RELATIONSHIP KILLERS All relationship killers come from fear of inadequacy, of failure, of rejection and of engulfment. As long as you are coming from any of these fears, you will be behaving in one or more of the above ways. The way out is to develop a loving adult self who knows how to take full responsibility for your own feelings and needs. You will move beyond controlling, needy and addictive behavior only when you learn how to fill your self with love and define your own inner worth. When you are willing to take your eyes off your partners plate and turn your eyes fully on yourself, you can begin to do the inner healing work necessary to heal yourself and your relationship. They'll Never Know - Tips to Saving Money When Planning Your Wedding

By Elizabeth Philpott At least once a year, Internet headlines and the front page of your local papers Life section declare the new average cost for weddings. Most recently, its been in the ballpark of $30,000, which is about what it cost for me to go to college. When I began to plan my wedding four years ago, I bought the phonebook-sized bridal magazines like every girl does. I spent time online gazing at gowns and table settings, but I went into the planning stages believing I could create almost everything the magazines insisted I have at my wedding from invitations to centerpieces. And I was right. I could create them, and so can you. Oh, and I also had a little extra inspiration: my fianc and I were paying for most of our own wedding. This certainly helped the creative juices flow as I searched for ways to cut costs without looking like I had cut corners. Its easier than you may think. First, some advice on where to start: think of the one thing most important to you on your wedding day and splurge there. If youve always dreamed of a particular dress designer, location, wedding cake designer, caterer or want spring flowers for your November nuptials, spend your money there. Once you decide on your most important aspect of the wedding, make a list of the things you must have (like invitations) and things youd like to have (like menu cards or guest favors). From here, you can identify the things youre actually capable of making yourself (with help, of course). Here are some ideas: Invitations: Yes, you can buy a package of pre-designed print at home invitations at your local craft store, but that is not your only option when it comes to designing and printing your own invitations. Take advantage of the Internet! First, use the invitation catalogs youll undoubtedly receive in the mail to pick out a design/color you like. Then, find a paper company and purchase blank cardstock in the colors you want. If you know someone with a gift for design or have an idea of your own, play around in your word processing program with a couple options. When it comes time to print, you could send the job out to a local printer (still cheaper than buying invitations), or you can print at home. If youre doing the job in-house, make sure your printer is clean and its print settings are all on high-quality, not high-speed. Do a few practice print outs. When you print the actual invitations, do them in small batches, not 200 at a time. This gives your printer a chance to clean itself and cool down. Centerpieces: Depending on where you choose to hold your reception, centerpieces may be included in the cost to rent the space. Even so, you may have something else in mind. Use those thick bridal magazines for ideas and simply copy them. A centerpiece featured in full color in one of these bridal guides could easily cost into the hundreds. But an elegant knock off is well within reach. One of the dcor items that add up quickly is votive candles. Glass holders that start at $1.00 each may seem inexpensive at first, but if youre planning to use 15 on each of 20 tables, youre looking at $300 for glass candle holders alone. A great substitute is plastic disposable votives, available through most church suppliers. I spent about $65 for 200 disposable red votives that burned for 10 hours. They were the most talked about dcor item of the wedding and cost about the least! Chair covers: Nothing dampens the elegance of a wedding like hard, upholstered chairs that dont match the wedding dcor. Its hard to pull off burgundy seats when your color is pink. Many reception halls offer seat covers for a few dollars a piece. They are usually a plain white but can be jazzed up with some silk flowers or ribbon. If seat covers are not on the menu, find some very wide ribbon at a local craft or fabric retailer and create giant bows to tie around the backs of each chair. Not so great at tying bows? Use a bow-tying tool, like the Bowdabra (www.bowdabra.com). These extra hands are available online and at most craft retailers. I actually had a chance to talk with Sandy Sandler, who created the Bowdabra, and asked her about some of the ways people have used the bow-maker for weddings. I have received some of the most incredible letters from people who have used the Bowdabra to create everything from pew bows to beautiful swags as centerpieces, said Sandler. Sandler features some wedding creations on her Web site. Speaking of Bows: You are most likely also responsible for decorating the church or actual wedding location. Of course you could hire someone or have your florist do this, but if youre looking to save a few dollars, pew bows are a very traditional adornment that are simple to make (especially if you have a bow-making tool!). The cake: If your wedding cake isnt that one thing you decide to splurge on, you can implement the oldest cost-cutter in the book. Purchase a beautiful wedding cake at a price you can afford and buy sheet cakes of the same cake flavor, which will hide out in the kitchen until the show cake is cut. Your guests will never know the piece they take home wrapped in a napkin didnt come from the cake they saw in front. Your shoes: Dont get talked into buying a pair of $50 dyeable wedding shoes when you buy your dress. Be creative and look for a pair of shoes youll actually wear after the big day. I bought a pair of sparkly blue slides that were cute, comfortable, and served as my something blue. Consider an all-inclusive reception hall: If youre thinking of renting a location that requires you to bring in the tent, chairs, caterer, baker, music and alcohol, compare the cost to a reception hall where everything is included. Youll have fewer loose ends to worry about as you approach the wire and youre likely spend a lot less. This is of course, if location, isnt your splurge item. One of the most important things to keep in mind when planning your wedding is this: Its your wedding there are no rules! If you dont want to wear your hair up, dont wear it up. If you dont want to wear a veil, dont wear one! If youd rather not sit at a head table and eat before an audience, reserve a table on the main floor for yourselves and the wedding party. Taking family tradition into consideration is one thing, but when its society at large pressuring you to conform, you have the power to say no! And let's face it unless you stick with them forever that weight all comes straight back on doesn't it? Because you go right back to the habits you had before you went on your weight loss program. The ones that caused you to put all that weight on in the first place. No, the secret to losing weight automatically is to make small changes to your routines. Ones which will be barely detectable to others - only you will really know the difference. You make changes like taking time to enjoy your food more, moving a little bit more as you go about your day, learning how to deal with pressures from others to eat, stopping eating whenever you're satisfied. And before you know it you are losing weight. Not only that but you have habits which you can stick to for life and which you'll never need (or want) to change. What small changes could you make today which would mean that you eat a little bit less and move a little bit more? Could you live with those changes for life? Then start right now to make them a habit. Habits are built by repetition and like having a shower or brushing your teeth become an automatic part of you without having to think about it. To be slimmer forever you simply need slimmer habits - habits which keep your metabolism high enough to deal with the amount you eat over a period of time. Relationship Advice: Pornographic Seduction?

By Steve Roberts The couple walks into my office. She is obviously hurt and angry. He has the look of angry confusion. She blurts out her discovery that he uses pornography. She feels as though he's been cheating on her. She feels betrayed. She finds the whole thing repulsive. How could he do this to her? He is ashamed on one level. On another level, it seems the most natural thing in the world. He's always looked at bodies. He has always had fantasies, and he can now see pictures and films just like them on the internet. His friends do it. The guys in the locker room talk about it. What's so wrong with it? This situation occurs with surprising frequency. Couples are angry and confused about what to do with it all and about what it really means. They feel terribly hurt and misunderstood. They'd like some answers instead of just blaming each other. So, here's some things to consider. 1. Any problem for a couple is a "team" problem. If one person hurts, the "team" has a problem. If one person is angry, then the "team" has a problem to resolve. It's not a competition where one wins and the other loses. It is about the "team" winning as a whole. The pornagraphy issue is the same. The couple needs to find a way that meets the needs of both people, so that the team wins. 2. Men and women have very different training and understanding of sexuality. Women are raised to focus much more on the relational aspects, while men grew up learning to focus on the visual and physical experience, often to the exclusion of relationship. In a culture that makes use of women's bodies to advertise and sell just about everything, women easily come to believe that they are only valued for their physical attractiveness. Many already feel ashamed of their bodies, believing they're supposed to be shaped like teenage boys. In their most intimate and important relationship they so desire to be loved and accepted for who they are, not what they look like. It comes as a very rude surprise to realize that their man seems to be just like all the others. Men, take note. When your partner's dream bubble is burst in this fashion, you have to take action, or it is downhill from there. As described above, men are trained to feel both guilty about pornography, and to accept it as the norm. They see it as a simple release mechanism, and not as cheating, betraying, or even having any real meaning at all. They are drawn to the relationality of their women, but often do not really understand it, let alone understand that pornography can damage it. 3. From a functional standpoint, here's the real problem with pornography: It seduces a man away from emotional intimacy with his partner. This doesn't have to be the case, but it occurs so often that I tend to assume it is happening until proven otherwise. The seduction is one of easy avoidance. There is no relationship to take care of or nurture. One doesn't have to live with the complaints or even the mistaken dreams of the fantasy figures. Worse still, the images are ever changing, ever titilating. Life at home with the same woman, the same old positions, and the same old timing can seem rather mundane. The problem with pornography is that men do not learn to develop the ability to be highly stimulated by deep emotional intimacy with their one, special partner. A successful team helps both partners learn to be intensely intimate with one another, and then intensely stimulated sexually. Pornagraphy offers the stimulation while avoiding the real reward of intimate closeness in the relationship. So, how do such couples handle this dilemma? At their best they use it as a vehicle to move them to an ever deeper level of contact with each other. They move past blaming and misunderstanding to acceptance of the other's gender and training. They come up with behavior that works for both of them and that they can both agree to and live with. Ultimately, it can be a journey of emotional intimacy that ends up being one huge "turn on." A Gardener's Diary

By Rachel Paxton Have you ever thought about keeping a gardener's diary to record what you plant and where you plant it? Keeping a diary will help you plan next year's garden by recording which plants grew well and which ones didn't. You can also note which colors do or don't look good together, or which plants overwhelm one another. Keep a record of how long the sun shines in different areas of your yard so you can find plants that require the appropriate amount of sunlight. In our yard, the soil is not the same everywhere. We have made do by planting different kinds of plants in different types of soil. We have a big patch of very sandy soil that turned out to be adequate to grow a good crop of zucchini and pumpkins last year, as long as we kept it well watered. Our tulips did really well last year. We have them scattered here and there throughout the yard, but their favorite place is in a very sandy shady spot next to the front porch. Those tulips were twice as big as the ones that got more sunshine. This year, however, we got a little warm weather in early spring and then a cold spell. The poor tulips never recovered from the cold and didn't bloom at all! One plant that doesn't seem to care where it is planted is our rhubarb. It has been moved from house to house several times, it has grown in different types of soil, and it has been watered inconsistently. I then cut it all off and it grows right back again! This plant seems impossible to harm. We're experimenting with daisies this year. I wanted to add some more color to our yard. I planted them in different places and will watch to see where they do best. I love looking at my yard and looking at all the different plants that people have given me. Who would have thought that plants could be keepsakes. You can make notes in your diary as to who gave you what plants and what meaning they have to you. Our rhubarb plant is the same one that we had at our home when I was a child, and my mom gave me some of the chrysanthemums that were given to me and planted in her yard when my daughter was born almost twelve years ago. Walking around the yard I see flowers from my aunt, rosemary from my husband's grandmother, and the young maple tree my daughter grew from a seed several years ago. There are many memories in our small surroundings. Planting seedlings from other people's gardens is also a great way to save money - plants are so expensive these days. Why pay for them at the store when you can get them for free? I also buy a lot of plants at the end of the season. A lot of stores have two-for-one sales and practically give away their leftover plants. Even a half wilted annual will perk right up when you give it a little tender-loving care. It will be back good as new next year. Your diary can be as simple as a spiral notebook or as fancy as a bound diary you can buy at the store. If you are good at drawing, you can also make sketches of your plants in your diary. If you end up living in the same place for many years, your gardening diary can be a little piece of history for your family. Your family will cherish those memories for a lifetime. While owning a pet fosters responsibility and compassion, some children are just not ready to help take care of a pet. It is a huge responsibility and one that must be given careful thought. There are many things you should consider as a family. What kind of pet? What kind of pet would fit into your life style best. There are many options from large dogs to little fish. You should carefully consider the needs of each and what you think will fit into you life style as well. The happiest pet is one with happy owners that dont feel stressed by its care and needs. You should study into types as well as breeds so you know exactly what to expect breeds. Can you afford the addition of a pet? Now that you have decided on a type of pet. You need to consider the cost of owning a pet. Pets even if you are given on free are very expensive. If you have a dog or a cat there will be vet visits, food, licensing, toys and supplies and if your pet should become sick there are medications they may need. Owning a pet is very expensive. Do you have the time? Animals require attention just like we do as human beings. The need to be feed, groomed, walked, played with. They need to know they are loved. With out proper care they will suffer. Families that are going threw major changes such as a move or birth of a child or that work long hours may just not have the time. Expectations about the pets care and exercise should be laid out clearly. Many children loose interest in a pet after the first few weeks and leave mom and dad to care for the pet. Pets require gentle handling and understanding do you think your child is ready for that? How do they react to animals you see out in public? Are they rough, or afraid? It may be better if they learn some animal care before you add a pet to your home. Visits to the local animal shelter are a wonderful start and often the staff is willing to teach basic animal care to children. Remember A pet is a huge commitment. Many pets live for at least 15 years with proper care. Will you still want this commitment then? Puppies, kittens and such are cute, but they grow and have needs that must be met. Always have a vegetable carrier oil like Pure Light Coconut Oil or Jojoba available to apply onto the skin in such cases! Apply a carrier oil will have an immediate effect of calming the skin irritation. Do not wash or rinse the area with water as this will drive the essential oils further into the skin and increase, not diminish discomfort. With such a selection to choose from, it can be extremely difficult to choose the rose that's right for you. To make this task a bit easier, We've outlined a few important factors you should consider, and explained some of the different types of roses to aid in your search. Tips on Choosing Roses 1. Color may seem trivial at first glance, but it's usually an important factor to those that want to grow roses. Usually it is simply a matter of personal preference, but you may want to try creating a complimentary color palette for your rose garden. 2. The final growth height of a rose should be considered as it would be unattractive to grow roses that are higher than the area of the garden that it grows in. Some roses can grow to be as high as 20 feet. 3. If you live in an area that is prone to cold winters, you would certainly want a rose that could survive during the off season. 4. If certain fragrances invoke an allergic reaction, you'll want to plant roses that have a softer fragrance than the others. 5. It's smart gardening to learn what the advantages and disadvantages would be if you were to choose certain roses over others. 6. You will want to consider the size of your garden space, so that you can ensure proper exposure to the air and other elements as well. 7. Old Garden Roses - These roses are not very good for those with severe allergies to strong fragrances because they have a strong fragrant odor. However, they are disease resistant and continue to bloom for months at a time. The Modern Rose - These are very special roses because they are the result of cross breeding the hybrid tea with the polyanthus. They are also referred to as Floribunda. They are a beautiful combination of the best those two flowers have to offer. They are long blooming, fragrant, and they are great for cutting. Miniature Roses - Miniature roses are exactly what they sound like. They have all of the fragrance and beauty of a regular rose, but they have smaller blooms.
